VERY PERTINENT QUESTIONS FOR A LIFE IN A SPIRITUAL STUPOR
Asking questions, the right ones, can elicit very informative answers.
It is a real good teaching tool. Malachi, the last prophet in the Old
Testament, employed this means to awaken God’s people. There are no fewer than
23 and no more than 27 in the Book.
Of them Bible teacher J. Vernon McGee says, “The method adopted by
Malachi is to first quote a declaration of interrogation God makes to Israel.
Then he gives Israel’s answer, which is supercilious and sophisticated sarcasm.
Finally, he gives God’s telling reply, which is equally biting sarcasm. Malachi’s
prophecy reveals an age deadened to sin. They were drugged to an
unconsciousness of sin. They were in a spiritual stupor with no conviction,
which is the lowest state of sin. They mouthed surprise that God would find
fault. They were peevish and petulant children who affected ignorance. They
pretended to know everything but were woefully lacking in a knowledge of
essentials.”
Carefully and prayerfully read the four chapters of this poignant Book. Look for and underline the questions. Meditate on God's answers. It will alert and sharpen your soul in a day impervious to sin, righteousness
and holiness.
