"WHOEVER FINDS A WIFE FINDS A GOOD THING..." Proverbs 18:22
I once went to a wedding reception where the bride was introduced as the groom's "thing." I was a bit taken back until I realized it was a Bible verse. "Whoever finds a wife finds a good thing" (Prov. 18:22).
Then, there's my favorite verse for husbands which every Christian man (and all others) should commit to memory:
"You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered" (1 Peter 3:7). (Put this on a 3X5 card and carry it with you.)
FOUR 'DOWN-TO-EARTH' FIGURES OF SPEECH HELP US TO UNDERSTAND IT.
1. A ROUND CONFERENCE TABLE...Although husbands are God's appointed leaders in the home they should not be foolish dictators who lack the sense to talk things over with a wife. Hey, Mr. Red Neck, she just may be smarter and wiser than you. Get smart and avail yourself of her abilities. God says, "live with your wives in an understanding way..." It's a round table, not a lecturn!
2. A PEDESTAL...The wife is "the weaker vessel." (God's words, not mine...not necessarily weaker in intelligence or abilities but most usually physically.) Therefore, she needs her husband's brawn. ("Honey, will you hang this picture.") This strength needs ever to lift her up, even placing her on a pedestal. When there, he hangs a blue ribbon around her neck and ever praises her for all she is and means to him. A 19th century Norwegian author once wrote a play entitled A DOLL'S HOUSE wherein a husband forever treats his wife like a doll rather than a human. She is forced to leave him in order to establish a life of her own. Husband, DO put her on a pedestal, but not too high up! She may be forced to leave you, out of shock! But live with her "...as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor."
3. A MOTORCYCLE..."as a fellow heir of the grace of life..." This "grace" is not that of salvation but means, in a more general sense, a "favor" in the sense of enjoying all that God has beneficially placed in His creation. We're to praise Him for all His wonders! The earth is full of them (in spite of sin's curse), and it is God's delight to see us enjoy them to the full. Have fun! Take in the sights and sounds of life. Don't be too serious.
4. A PRAYER CLOSET..."so that your prayers will not be hindered." A snarling, fighting relationship hinders one's walk with God, let alone a testimony for God. Get things in order so that fellowship and one's prayer life and power with God are not hindered. If we regard iniquity in our hearts, let alone in our relationships, the Lord will not hear us. There goes our power! (Psalm 66:18).
Lead the way, husband! Be a real man, God's kind of man. A Union soldier wrote his wife a week before he died at Bull Run. He wrote, "If there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath....my spirit passing by." Question: Am I a tender, God-like husband?
Am I loving and loveable? Does she know she's my "good thing" because I'm God's kind of husband?
