LET'S CLEAN OUT OUR EARS AND L I S T E N.....

Good 'listeners' are a rare breed. Very rare! In all my years of pastoring with scores and scores of visitors at our table, I can remember just two who were genuinely more interested in learning of my life and/or thoughts than in recounting, detail after detail, their own experiences.

Now that we're on in years, few show any curiosity about where you've been or what you've done through long years rich with experiences of all sorts. The younger generations pretty much think they have an edge on human history and know all they need to know. Seems they say: "We're on the scene and can tell you anything you want to know, or, we can 'google' and spout off an answer almost instantly. Don't bore us with history or the traditions of our fathers. Only old fogies like the old hymns. And, old preachers just aren't cool enough or in the know. We are a generation unto ourselves."Yes, count the guy out if he's not in jeans or collarless shirt.

When I was a kid we prized the older preacher and looked forward to the next preaching conference more than the next star-studded, flashing lighted 'sacred'  concert.  Oh, wait a minute we weren't THAT wild and worldly in those days!  Now don't take me wrong. I do delight in meaningful, unworldly, God-honoring new music. There's quite a bit of it around.  But, depreciating the 'old' counters the wisdom of the ages. I once read the remarks of a present-day well-known preacher who referenced the present young generation as the first that doesn't appreciate the music of their elders. That's a pretty sad commentary! But let us remember that even the all-knowing Jesus often referenced the sages of old and frequently recounted past works whereby the hand of God revealed His will and wonders. In fact,  the Bible tells us to 'remember' such. Seems sensible enough that the elderly, or anyone for that matter, may just have lots of good stuff to share if we just zip the lips and take time to ask some questions,  clean out our ears, and tune it. I see humor in this verse, do you? The wise man said, "The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them" (Prov. 20:12}. Didn't He make the mouth too? No need to mention it. It often flaps on its own, no thought given.  THERE, I got that off my chest! Now, I'm ready to listen to your heated disagreements. (Smile.)
