A EUPHEMISM is the substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression for another one thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt.
In our current western Christian culture, which too often isolates the ethic of love (thereby minimizing truth, righteousness, holiness, etc.), Christians hesitate to speak directly when conveying the Word and will of God. The Word itself is sharper than a two-edged sword but shame on us for dulling it in our conveyance thereof.
Nevertheless, God's Word speaks 'to the point.' In so many passages God simply 'says it like it is.' Read these couple of verses:
"Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord" (1 Peter 2:1-3).
The writer bluntly names five sins: malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy and slander. Boom, boom, boom! What he says is, get the junk food out of your soul, name it for what it is, confess it, and then proceed to fill yourself with "the pure milk of the word." The milk will sour in your soul if you don't. There's no "charming" stuff here, just straightforward facing of the facts, get rid of the undesirables, and then get strong in the Lord. To use another figure, pull out the weeds and then plant the good seed. "Help us, dear God, to get to the point of true repentance and faith!"
